A clean home is a happy home, but cleaning is only half of the battle. Almost everyone with a home will inevitably acquire too much stuff. Likewise, almost everyone will have to declutter at some point. Where do you begin? We have some ideas!
Establish a Process
Decluttering your home can be daunting, so start small. Clear off a countertop or a workbench. Once you’ve found some motivation, take one room – or section of a room – at a time. Organize donate, keep, and toss piles so that you know where everything will go. Make sure you bring cleaning supplies, as your rummaging will no doubt reveal dust and other unpleasantries.
“Tag” Unused Clothing
Got a closet full of clothes you never wear, but finding it hard to part with them? Use the hanger tagging trick! The first time you wear a garment, turn the hanger hook the opposite way. In a year’s time, get rid of anything you haven’t tagged. You’d be surprised how much room you can clear out. At the very least, you’ll be encouraged to shake up your wardrobe.
Get Rid of Things You Don’t Use
That bookshelf or DVD rack might look impressive…but how often have you revisited those stories? If there’s something you haven’t picked up in a long time, consider donating it. Plenty of local charities would love to take them off your hands. While Goodwill is a great start, your local library often sells used books to raise money, and afterschool programs could make great use of old media.
Move Seasonal Items to a Storage Unit
For stuff you rarely use – seasonal decorations, specialized equipment – you can often free up valuable space by moving them to a self-storage unit. These items are usually bulky and unsightly, so storing them off of your property can really help.
Are you removing clutter from your home? If you find yourself with more than you have room for – but can’t let go – consider a self-storage unit! Alamance Self-Storage offers both standard and climate-controlled storage units with available 24/7 access and excellent security. Our units come in sizes as small as a closet to as large as a garage! Contact us today for a free estimate.
